Your December Story | Blog Hop & Giveaway

Holiday Extravaganza guest blogger Debbie Hodge, invited me to participate in her newest workshop “Your December Story”. If you’re a regular reader, you know how much I love storytelling, and reading through Debbie’s workshop gave me a ton of great ideas for how I want to set up the story in my December Daily album this year.

I’ll be playing along with “Your December Story” and I’m giving away a free pass to this awesome class.

I checked out lesson 1 of Debbie Hodge’s Your December Story this weekend, and I want to tell you about the class and give you a peek at how it’s inspired me. And I’m giving away one pass to the class. (If you already purchased the class, you’ll get a $24 gift card good for any other GIS/MSD classes.)

Your December Story is shaped around the Hero’s Journey

This December, like Dorothy dropped into Oz or Alice tumbled into Wonderland, you will receive a call to adventure. You will move from the ordinary world into a one of magic and tests as the holiday season arrives.

Many of the most-loved and best remembered stories play out in a story form described by Joseph Campbell as “the hero’s journey.” This class has prompts and page ideas for visual storytelling that have you telling Your December Journey, from the heralds, to the challenges, mentors, special tools and the return to the known world and what you take forward.

I love that this course pulls from some of my favorite classic stories. Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, and more — which for me is especially pertinent, as I’m kind of obsessed with Once Upon a Time and Once Upon a Time in Wonderland right now.

You can take the journey and get a $10 gift card!

but only through midnight Wednesday, November 20th. When you purchase “Your December Story” by midnight PT, Wednesday, November 20, you also get a $10 gift card that you can use for Get It Scrapped and Masterful Scrapbook Design classes. Click here to purchase Your December Story and get the $10 gift card.

Here is how ‘Your December Story’ has inspired me

This is a visual storytelling class — which is EXACTLY how I like to document my December. Reading through lesson one, I found myself nodding my head and jotting down some ideas to set up this year’s December Daily album.

My favorite section of lesson one is devoted to embracing your call to document your December adventure, and figuring out where that call begins.

What are the heralds of the impending adventure…and then how do we know that you’ve accepted the call, that you’re embarking upon your December adventure?

For me this is a no-brainer. My holiday adventure always begins with a peppermint hot chocolate from Starbucks. Holding that red cup in my hand, inhaling that brilliant Christmas aroma, and taking the first couple sips of that delicious drink transform regular time into magical time.

Here’s how I documented my call to adventure last year —

The rest of last year’s December album can be seen here, and subscribe via your favorite reader for updates on how I’ll be integrating Your December Story with my December Daily album this upcoming holiday season.

For me it’s when we see the ‘Coca Cola’ advert on TV. Not sure if you get the same one in the US but it’s the ‘Holidays are coming’ one. That’s it for me. It’s Christmas :)

    • I’ve definitely seen that one! The Coca Cola santa and polar bears are some of my favorite holiday icons.

The holiday season starts for me right after Thanksgiving–I try to hold off and just enjoy autumn and the season of harvest and gratitude before rushing into the festivities of Christmas.

    • I completely agree. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I like to soak as much of it in as I can.

  • Becky Gotch

The season starts for me when we book our family trip to the pantomime – the ‘children’ are now 22 and 24 but it is something we have done every year since they were 4 and 2!

    • That sounds so awesome! I love family traditions :)

  • Debbie Ketcham

The Christmas season starts for me the day after Thanksgiving. My husband puts up the outside lights on our house. Now that my sons are older, they help him. Thanks for the chance to win a pass!!! Debbie

    • You’re super welcome! I used to love to help my parents decorate our house, and I can’t wait until we can move out of our apartment and into a home of our own to decorate.

  • Janine van Emden

our december starts with Sinterklaas. A traditional Dutch childersfest. I am a firm believer in “no christmas until Sinterklaas has left Holland”..
So with Sinterklaas om the 5th of December.. On the 6th I break out the christmas stuff. We buy a tree, decorate it, stock up on glühwein… And let the festivities begin!!

  • charline

December 1 is THE date for me.. Doing the tree and starting to play Xmas music

    • Love me some Christmas music! What are some of your favorite tunes?

  • Jennilyn Thiboult

Red Starbucks cups :) That’s where the holiday magic begins :)

    • Yep:D All the cool kids are doing it :D

  • Beth

We started this season by putting up lights and decorating a little pine tree outside.

    • Christmas lights are one of my favorite things in the entire world. :)

  • Linda Jordan

My holiday season begins with the starbucks red cups as well :) I don’t like the holiday specific drinks, I’m obsessed with the basic mocha, but the red cups + their decoration definitely do it for me! Speaking of starbucks, have you seen their amazing giftcard this year? [it’s in my instagram feed] It’s shaped like the red holiday cup and even has it’s own cardboard sleeve…definitely got that for my december daily!! haha [plus, it’s not like I won’t buy starbucks anyways so I just transferred the money off of it onto my gold card and it was basically free, extra awesome!]

    • Yes!! I saw your IG photo! I need to get one of those asap. It needs to go into my DD album.

  • silviahaynes

My Holiday season begins Midnight after Thanksgiving , although it;s sad that so many retailers will be opening on Thanksgiving evening

    • I totally agree. It makes me very upset when I find out that someone can’t make holiday dinner because they have to be at a retail job instead. It’s one reason why I make it a family rule to not shop on holidays. I know I’m only one person — but change starts with one person!

  • Laura Parsons

The season for me starts right around Thanksgiving when we pick a family to provide presents to for Christmas and I start getting my shopping strategy for them figured out .

    • That sounds so wonderful! I need to get a shopping strategy this season — I’ve been leaving it till the last minute these past few years and it’s not a good thing.

  • keshet

What a cool take on a December project! we celebrate Chanuka, so it comes at different dates each year, but it’s soon this year!

    • The same day as Thanksgiving! so exciting. We aren’t having our family celebration until later in December when everyone is able to get back home from wherever they are.

  • Bernadette Gerich

The holiday season starts for me on the 1st of December when we put the tree up.

    • We usually put the tree up on the Sunday after Thanksgiving — which is December 1st this year!

  • Roberta V

The season starts for me in early November when I begin the preparations for the Holiday. Thank you for a chance to win a spot in the class.

    • You’re so welcome, thanks for stopping by and commenting.

  • Phyllisf

I start with cards and cooking supplies in November, but don’t decorate and really get into the swing of the holidays until December.

    • Cards! Everyone’s comments are reminding me that I really need to get a move on with my holiday cards.

  • Marina Delgado

Thanksgiving Day and decorating the day after really signals the start of the Holiday season for me =)

    • Me too! I think that’s one of the reasons Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.

  • Courtney M

The holiday season starts for me November 1. We celebrate Canadian Thanksgiving in October, so after Hallowe’en the holidays begin. We have a focus of being grateful throughout November, and don’t start the Christmas decorating until the day after Thanksgiving. By anticipating the craziness of December starting November 1, it seems December is less crazy. There are less last minute plans, and less last minute gift runs. We know our basic plans, and there’s room to add spontaneous events.

    • That sounds so perfect. I love the room to add spontaneous events — there are always so many cool things going on around the holidays that I’d love to get to, but I never seem to leave enough room in the schedule.

  • JoyfullyDonna

Actually, right after the Halloween decorations are put away I begin thinking of the upcoming holidays! I’m also realizing after commenting on all these blogs that I have SEVERAL heralds of the holiday season!

    • That’s one of my favorite things about blogs! Just starting a dialog helps you to learn lots of new things about yourself that you haven’t realized before.

  • Maureen Reynolds

Christmas really starts after Thanksgiving because that’s when I get the boxes of decorations down.

    • Same here. We’ve been storing our big holiday boxes in my parents’ basement, and they bring them over on Thanksgiving and we start decorating over the weekend.

  • Stacia H

It starts when the Christmas Cookie candles come out at our house!

    • Christmas Cookie candles are the best scent in the whole world!

  • glee

Mine starts the day I get my first order of Christmas cards from Shutterfly. Now I have to write the notes that go with. I usually do that while I watch the Macy’s Tgiving day parade on TV!!

    • What a fantastic tradition! I need to get working on my holiday cards for this year.

  • Christel

It all starts when I make my christmas cakes late October then it vanishes until early december. It also varies from year to year.

    • Christmas cakes sound awesome! What kind are they?

  • Karyn Allen

Definitely ALL YEAR ROUND – I love Christmas Music and can be found playing it in July or March or December. Thanks for the opportunity.

    • Christmas music is the best! Any time I need to work on Christmas projects early, I crank up my holiday playlist and it gets me right in the mood.

  • Emily

Mine starts a few days before or after Thanksgiving because that is when I start buying Christmas presents. However this year, it seems like it came a little early because I have been purchasing Christmas supplies for the house and supplies that I will use to craft with.

    • Christmas crafting supplies sound awesome! What projects are you planning on working on?

  • Missus Wookie

Oh yes Peppermint Mocha – I’ve had the first of the season (although mine was home made) definitely a herald of the season for me too! The season starts officially on the first day of Advent (that’s when we decorate) but before that I’m very aware of the other hints and preparations :)

    • Do you have a good recipe? Every time I’ve tried making it at home it turns out terrible lol! I’m trying to finish up my advent calendar this week, but I’m finding myself stuck on the final details.

      • Missus Wookie

Yes I do – I’ll post it on my blog tomorrow –

        • Thank you so much!! <3

          • Missus Wookie

Hope you both like it! The frosty version is good too :)

        • Janine van Emden

oohh… I wrote that one down and trying it this weekend..

  • irene.oneill

The holiday season really starts for me when I decorate my house on December 1st. Although by that time, I usually have most of my gifts purchased, I don’t really feel the “spirit” until the house is decorated.

The holidays season starts in October when I start making my soaps for gifts. Thanks for the chance to win!

    • Making soaps sounds like such a great gift!

  • Donna Urban

Christmas starts in December for me.

  • Autumn

The holidays start for me in October…especially at the first cool evening! I teach school so the children get excited at Halloween time and it doesn’t let up. It’s contagious!

    • Oh I bet! The holidays are super contagious — especially when kiddos are involved!

  • Jenny McGee

The Christmas holiday starts for me after Thanksgiving. We usually wait until about mid Dec. to put up our tree and decorations. I like to stretch it out until after New Year’s though.

    • We left our tree up through New Years’ last year, the lights were so cozy I couldn’t bear to take it down.

  • Janet Trapp

Dec 6th when we celebrate Stocking Day for St. Nicholas feast day!

    • That sounds like an awesome tradition!

  • Laurie LaRose

I guess on Dec 1 with the advent getting pulled out…

  • Julia C

In the past, the Christmas season started for me with all the end of year school activities my children were involved in. Now my son has just done his final exams (so has finished school early), I’m not really sure when it’ll feel like it’s really started.

    • That’s how I would feel when I was in college — and I always seemed to get unlucky and have an exam scheduled for the last possible exam period.

  • Jo

Christmas starts one the 1st of December when I start my journal, however it only begins to feel like Christmas after the annual reindeer parade which this year is on the 8th December,
    Jo xxx

    • Reindeer parade! That sounds so cool

  • Debra Williams

Going to try this instead of a December daily. Wish me luck

    • Debra Williams

Christmas starts with the purchase of Christmas scrapbooking supplies and the making go Christmas cards.

      • I’m still waiting for some of my Christmas supplies to get here, it has me a bit anxious.

    • Yay! Can’t wait to see what you make :D

    • Hey Debra! You’re the winner of the Your December Story giveaway! drop me an email at and I’ll send the information right over!

  • Laura Milazzo

The holiday season starts when my mom calls in early November for our wish lists. We live a thousand miles away so she needs time to shop and ship. My older son (7) laughed hysterically this year as he relayed his hope for more, “Captain Underpants” books. A story I will be capturing this year but wouldn’t have without the inspiration from you and Debbie.

    • Books are the best gifts! I’d love to see how you capture your story:)

  • Candy

This is very interesting! Our holiday starts over Thanksgiving when we cut down a tree and hang up the outdoor lights. I like to play some music to get me in the mood.

    • I’d love to cut down a tree one year! I was really allergic when I was little, but I’ve grown accustomed to it now and I think that would be such a wonderful experience.

  • Denise

Our holiday starts the day after Thanksgiving or when I see ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ coming on.

  • Melinda Thao

Its starts on Thanksgiving! I love to start by documenting how grateful and blessed we are!

  • Cathy Eberhardt Holiday

My season starts on Thanksgiving Friday, time to bring up the tree and finish the turkey leftovers!

  • LeeAndra Blicher Fouts

Christmas begins the day after Thanksgiving. :)

  • Tiffany

For me the holiday season starts with Halloween. That’s the beginning.

  • Susan Gray

Day after thanksgiving I’m in full Xmas mode

  • Elizabeth

It seems to start earlier and earlier every year. I believe the first Christmas items appeared in the supermarket in October – wow, now that’s early.
